Ammara Brown is a Zimbabwean female singer, songwriter specializing in Afro-pop and RnB. She is also a brand ambassador and an actress.
She is the daughter of the legendary Andy Brown. Her career began in the 1990’s starting with a TV commercial that she starred in alongside Oliver Mtukudzi.
She began her musical endeavours at the tender age of 13, making her first demo song for her parents.
In 2003 she sang as a backing vocalist, joining her father’s band ‘The Storm’. Her fans have affectionately earned the title of ‘Ammartians’.

Ammara Brown Age: Ammara Nury Brown is 31 years old and was born in Harare, Zimbabwe to Andy Brown and Soraya Brown on the 6th September 1988.
Ammara Brown Family: She is the 1st child between her parents and the 2nd child of her father’s 10 children. Her parents were divorced in 1994, following which, she relocated with her mother to the USA for 4 years. She was 10 years old at the time.
She is a single mother to her son, Khameel, whom she had with a dancer, Darim Da Paixao, currently based in South Africa.
Ammara Brown Education: She attended Alameda High School from 2002 to 2003 and when she returned to Zimbabwe, she attended Westridge High School and completed her secondary education there.
Ammara Brown Career: Ammara Brown is occasionally compared to her legendary father, the late Andy Brown. Her music style does differ though, as she sings Afro/Pop music.
Ammara Brown was thrust into the music industry at the early age of 3 years and got her first taste of fame in the Olive cooking oil television commercial in 1997. At 9 years old she learnt how to play the Mbira and plays the piano also.
She was a member of the Martin Luther King Choir at 13 and produced her own demo song for her parents, which brought her father to tears.
Ammara Brown won the regional Music Crossroads in 2004 and later studied music at the College of Performing Arts (COPA), earning honours and distinctions.
In 2008 Ammara made it into the top 10 of Idols East and Southern Africa, being 1 of only 5 Zimbabweans, however, she was eventually eliminated and only made it to 5th position. She performed at the FIFA soccer World Cup in 2010 that took place in South Africa, alongside Flabba from Skwatta Kamp. She has also performed for Malawian presidents Joyce Banda and Bingu Wa Mutharika.
Ammara Brown has performed with Mi Casa at the Harare International Festival of Arts (HIFA), Skwata Kamp, P-Squared, Winky D and Tehn Diamond.
Ammara made a surprise appearance on stage and twerked for Nigerian singer, D’banji during the 2013 edition of the Lion Lager Beer Festival that he attended.
Brown has performed with various artists and first signed up with Gallo Records which later was renamed Zimbabwe Music Corporation. It was the same record label that her father was signed with. Ammara has also won and been nominated for various awards throughout her career.

2019 - Best Southern Africa Female Artiste award under the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) in Nigeria
2019 - Best African Female Artiste under the African Talent Awards in Côte d’Ivoire
2020 - Best Female Artist of the Year at the Zimbabwe Music Awards
Ammara Brown Controversy: While some sources say that Ammara Brown has been the victim of abuse, she simply claims that she has witnessed it.
Soon after the passing of her father, Ammara Brown caused a stir, making an announcement to sell the home which belonged to her parents as per their wishes.
It was also alleged that Ammara Brown and Jah Prayzah had, had an affair. She had collaborated with Jah Prayzah on Kure Kure. She incessantly denied the allegations, saying that she would never wreck his marriage and insisted that they were just friends.
Ammara Brown confirmed in June 2014, that she was in love with the controversial Urban Grooves musician, Roki. Reports calimed that the couple had been making plans to marry. However, sources say that Ammara had turned Roki’s proposal down and the songstress remained tight-lipped about the entire affair, yet not denying they were in a relationship.
Ammara Brown announced in January 2015 that they were just friends and the details of their breakup remained quite vague.
In 2014 Brown was caught in a media storm after the release of her single titled ‘Crucify Me’. The cover depicts a creature with huge wings on a woman’s body and a crow’s head, while the cross has several various ornaments and chains hanging from either side.
Religious fanatics criticized and argued that she was mimicking the crucifixion of Jesus. Ammara Brown argued that it was actually about a woman cheating on a man and had no religious undertones.
She defended her cover decision saying that it is her artistic expression. There were also allegations that the cover spoke about a connection she had with the Illuminati, which she also insisted was not true. Explaining her cover Ammara said, “This is really about the song… when a woman cheats on her man… the man is crucifying the woman for a mistake he, himself, has made before…” she said
In 2018, Ammara Brown was also accused by Tapiwa “Akili” Matavire for using his stage name as the inspiration to her hit song ‘Akiliz’. The rapper said that he and Ammara had met in Cape Town a few years back when he was based there.
“I called Roki to Cape Town; he’s an old friend. I dealt with her (Ammara) when she was dating Roki; dealt with her for all his (Roki) logistics because she was somewhat managing Roki,” Akili told the Daily News.
“I think she thought my name sounded exotic,” said Akili
“I honestly really like the song. My only beef is that she could have just let me know prior to me hearing my name on the radio for a relationship I had nothing to do with. I know for a fact though that she could have just contacted me for authorisation,” said Akili.
Ammara hit back, saying, “I have never heard of Akili in my life, but if it’s media he’s looking for, here is his 5 minutes of fame…tick tick… and it’s over. Moving along.”
The young female artist is truly a sensation in Zim and she is unstoppable. Ammara seems focused on only giving what the fans want, which is great music.
