The year 2020 was a harsh period for everyone globally. No country, business, or institution has been spared from the devastating wrath of the coronavirus pandemic.

For Nakiso Borehole Drilling, it was a year of limitless possibilities and growth. By now, the start-up was less than a year in existence, in an industry traditionally dominated by few established companies, who enjoyed a monopoly in water provision across the country.

“The company’s journey began in November 2019. By then, there were only four people that is the CEO Lincoln Masiyenyama, Brilliant Chipangura for operations, Oudney Patsika, the head of marketing, and Tendayi Chikovi, specialising in corporate administration,” said the CEO.

With demand for borehole drilling on the increase, the concern executed an expansion strategy by recruiting more experienced personnel and investing in modern drilling equipment. “By then, we had only one truck and we had a one week backlog of jobs. In less than a year, we had acquired multiple and modern service trucks,” the CEO continued.

An innovative marketing strategy via diverse social media platforms amplified the company’s brand visibility. “Various people and institutions were now talking about Nakiso Borehole Drilling, and more inquiries started to come in. We had big organisations that came through our social media platforms with various projects,” confirmed the CEO.

Over the year, Nakiso Borehole Drilling attained a steady regional and global reach, the CEO recalls. “We even received phone calls from South Africa and Europe. We began offering quality services without even meeting our clients in person.” The entity’s robust online visibility stunned its industrial peers.

The same year, the company drilled and installed boreholes at various venues to fulfil their Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) mandate. A community borehole was installed at Glory Ministries in Chitungwiza and two more in Epworth and Highfields in partnership with NGOs and Churches. The communal initiatives have improved water supplies for the local people, especially women who spend hours fetching the precious liquid.

Nakiso Borehole Drilling concluded the year 2020 on a high. Masiyenyama, the CEO clinched the Young Corporate Director of the Year – Best Start-up Company conferred by the distinguished Institute of Corporate Directors Zimbabwe (ICDZ).
